Programme Director for Baltic Ecoregion Programme

WWF is one of the world's leading non-profit and independent nature conservation organizations. In order to achieve our goals, we work both at the political level and in the field and in close cooperation with civil society and companies around the world. WWF is active in over 100 countries on five continents and has more than five million supporters.

The WWF Baltic Ecoregion Programme is an ambitious and highly influential partnership comprised of WWF offices and other affiliated organizations in the nine coastal Baltic Sea countries. The goal of the Programme is to secure “A healthy, diverse and resilient Baltic Sea, sustainably managed for the benefit of people and nature of the region.”

To build on growing momentum within the Programme, and to seize emerging opportunities, WWF is looking for a visionary and communicative leader who can drive an innovative and transformative agenda that will deliver results in the Baltic Sea region, and also serve as an inspiration for other regions of the world grappling with the complex issues of ocean governance. This position offers an exciting opportunity to have a profound impact on the Baltic Sea’s future. Also, given the extent to which this region is already looked to as a role model, it is likely that the impact will reach far from the region’s borders as well.

The Programme Director will play a pivotal role in knitting together conservation, policy, finance, fundraising and communication experts in the WWF Network across the region to address the environmental challenges across the seascape and landscape of the Baltic Sea catchment. The role will also include building an external network of influential decision-makers, thought-leaders, and funders who are willing to both support and engage with WWF on key initiatives. Responsibilities also include securing the financial resources necessary to provide a solid foundation for expanding and advancing the scope of WWF’s work in the Baltic region. Thus, we are looking for a high-capacity leader with solid knowledge of Baltic Sea environmental challenges who also has demonstrated skills in communications and fundraising, as well as in building coalitions and partnerships across governments, the private sector and civil society. You will work from WWF’s office in Stockholm, Sweden.

Major Functions:

  • Direct the Baltic Programme in a manner that drives innovation and transformative change.

  • Staff responsibility for a smaller group of highly skilled team members.

  • Provide technical and thought leadership that advances WWF’s vision for transformational change across the Baltic region within governmental policy processes, public and private investments, conservation initiatives, market actors and mechanisms.

  • Work with the Baltic Team offices, Baltic Steering Group, and WWF network to develop, implement and adapt the Baltic Programme strategy to drive transformational change.

  • Identify and build a strong culture of collaboration with key partners and networks that can help advance WWF’s strategic objectives in the region.

  • Provide clear and powerful communication, both internally and externally, and represent WWF in external fora.

  • Seek and secure a significant expansion in funding for the programme.

  • Develop and manage processes for transparent external and internal monitoring, evaluation, and progress reporting, as well as being responsible for the Programme budget.

Preferred Qualifications and Competencies:

  • University degree in International Relations/Development, Marine Environmental Management, or a relevant field.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated fundraising skills as well as that of managing multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Experience of working in multi-cultural environment and/or international organizations.

  • A thorough understanding of the Baltic Sea’s environmental challenges and the institutional, public-private and civil society actors active across the region.

  • Good understanding of the European and regional policies relevant for the Baltic Sea and experience with advocacy.

  • Proven track record of developing strategic advocacy plans and activities.

  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills and an ability to communicate clearly and accurately to a variety of audiences, both internal and external.

  • Fluent in English and Swedish; any other Baltic language/s is an asset.

  • Adherence to WWF’s values, for example: Courage, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration.

WWF Sweden office is located in the beautiful Castle of Ulriksdal beside the Edsviken waterway, an inlet of the Baltic Sea.
